According to the Times Colonist, Canadian Sylvie Rochette founded Victorian Epicure in 1991 in Victoria, British Columbia. Victorian Epicure's offices are situated with their manufacturing plant on an 80-acre agricultural property north of Victoria. Rochette began her venture offering just four spice blends, but as of 2010 produces more than 300 along with a line of gourmet food products, cookware and a body care line. Victorian Epicure also established the Epicure Foundation, a nonprofit aimed at education and poverty relief.

History of Victorian Epicure

Sylvie Rochette founded Victorian Epicure in 1991 by bringing four blends of spices she made herself to a country farmer's market in Victoria. Her warm and friendly demeanor and high quality product generated a demand for her spice blends that she was not able to fulfill on her own. At first, Victorian Epicure manufactured spice blends for wholesale. Rochette realized, however, that her personalized service was one of her best marketing tools and switched to a direct marketing business model. Independent sales associates hold Victorian Epicure parties in their homes and keep a percentage of the sales when their friends and families purchase spice blends, gourmet foods and cookware. As of 2010, Victorian Epicure had $100 million per year in sales.

Victorian Epicure Products

Food items account for 80% of the value of Victorian Epicure's sales. In addition, Victorian Epicure sells cookware, home and body care items and gourmet food items. Ingredients are sourced from around the world; for example, Bourbon vanilla beans come from Madagascar. Some ingredients, however, like the grapes for wine jellies, come from the farm where Victorian Epicure's offices reside. Victorian Epicure's best selling product is a cheese, olive and bacon mix for making dip.
