Junk Food Is Bad For You
Matching wine with chemically enhanced junk food may not seem like a common request for connoisseurs, but as more people turn to wine as an alternative to beer and soda pop, there is an interest in such odd pairing. Whether it is snuggling up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn to watch a movie, having an informal gathering where chips and pretzels are on the table, or serving up mom's famous fudge brownies, believe it or not there is a perfect wine to go with it.
Waupoos Estates Winery was the first winery to be established in Prince Edward County located in Southern Ontario. It sits within a large irregular headland at the Eastern end of Lake Ontario, just west of the head of the St. Lawrence River. The relatively mild climate makes it an ideal area for growing grapes. Today there are about 30 established wineries in Prince Edward County. Waupoos opened up in 2001 and although wine maker Amy Mumby develops her wines with conventional and fine dining in mind, she admits she loves Doritos and Waupoos Riesling. I caught up with Mumby during the middle of a bottling session. "After a long day of bottling I have been known to eat Doritos with Riesling. Our 2008 Riesling is excellent with Doritos," she stated with a smile.
Mumby said although some wine can be enjoyed on its own, it is impossible to go through the process of developing wine without thinking about food. She knows there are so many elements to consider before the grapes even come off the vines. While sitting in her office overlooking the picturesque shores of Prince Edward Bay, Mumby explained what it is like at harvest time. "I don't sleep, but there is nothing you can do. You just do what you can do and hope for the best."
