Sci-fi television lovers beware! Many sci-fi faves are in danger of getting canned this season. With Lost ending it's run, what will there be to watch? Viewers without cable or satellite television can only count on The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural.
Network TV Sci-Fi Updates
ABC cancelled Eastwick and Lost is ending. CBS hasn't announced the fate of Ghost Whisperer and Medium. NBC's Heroes and Chuck hasn't been given the go ahead yet. FOX has cancelled it's new offering, Past Life and no decision yet for Fringe. The only sure bets for network television are on the CW, which has renewed The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural. Here are the likely winners and losers for each network:
- (ABC) Better Off Ted- Likely Cancelled. After the surprising go ahead for a second season, the ratings tanked. Don't expect a 3rd season.
- (ABC) Eastwick- Cancelled.
- (ABC) Flashforward- Teetering. This show had a strong start, but the ratings haven't been spectacular. ABC may give it the go ahead. A lot will depend on its March ratings.
- (ABC) Lost- Ending
- (ABC) V- Likely Renewal. Even though V had a strong viewer drop off (14.3 M- 9.3 M Episode 1 to 4), it's short season and strong showing are likely to lead to a renewal by ABC unless the March showings tank.
- (CBS) Ghost Whisperer- Likely Renewal. Ghost Whisperer leads it's time slot.
- (CBS) Medium- Likely Renewal. Medium is another timeslot leader. CBS isn't likely to change its Friday night line up.
- (FOX) Past Life- Cancelled.
- (FOX) Fringe- Likely Renewal. Fringe ratings have dropped this season, but expect a renewal. It's gotten a boost from the Bones lead-in Jan. 28th and Feb. 4th which led to a 15% and 18% ratings increase respectively. It carries its own against a tough line up which includes Grey's Anatomy, CSI, and 30 Rock.
- (NBC) Heroes- Likely Cancelled. The ratings have been disappointing. The season finale only garnered 4.4 million viewers. NBC could renew for a shortened season since their line up is in such bad shape.
- (NBC) Chuck- Likely Renewal. Chuck out performed Heroes, and NBC doesn't have a lot of options. It's a good bet for another season.
- (CW) The Vampire Diaries- Renewed. This is the network's highest rated series. It's a done deal.
- (CW) Supernatural- Renewed. It has a strong enough showing in it's time slot that the CW already gave the go ahead.
- (CW) Smallville- Likely Renewal. Insiders expected season nine to be its last, but Smallville is going strong. Expect a 10th season.
Cable TV Sci-Fi Updates
The Syfy channel has already renewed a lot of its line up including Eureka and Warehouse 13. It's probably going to stand by Caprica even though the ratings don't warrant it. FX renews Archer. The current status of these cable shows are:
