Food Government Warning
An exciting and somewhat terrifying film, The Future of Food graphically reveals the ongoing industrialization of food production. Currently, Agribusiness owns patents on seeds, organisms, trees, and living beings. If any of Monsanto's seeds, for example, are found to be growing in a farmer's field, their entire life's work is at risk. The farmers have no way to keep the seeds out, which may come into their land via the wind, dropped from trucks transporting the seed, or their fields may be contaminated by the seeds. And most of Canada, the U.S. and much of Mexico has been contaminated with the genetically modified seeds patented by Monsanto.
Deborah Koons Garcia's Dramatic Film Exposes Danger to World's Food Supply
One of the dangers to the food supply comes from control over seeds being in so few hands. The monocultures that have been grown by large food corporations have drastically reduced the biodiversity and natural immunity of much of the world's food supply. Using the case of a Canadian farmer who was sued by Monsanto, Garcia has shown the vulnerability of people around the world to the powerful agribusinesses in concert with government protection.
With a lack of GMO labeling, the consumer has no way to know what food they are buying nor are the corporations held accountable for problems as they arise. The heartbreaking individual stories of farmer and the injustices they have uncovered regarding the unethical congress between agribusiness and the U.S. government is chilling. Using such science as "cell invasion technology," agribusiness is changing the face of the basic cell structure of the food that the world depends upon for survival. The long-term consequences of such modifications are yet unknown.
Multinational Agribusiness Has Control Over Most of World's Food and Seed Supplies
Garcia's film is high impact and informative. Along with all the individual interviews with experts and personal accounts of farmers, there are extra interviews on disc with people such as Dr. Michael Hansen of Consumers Union, discussing at length concerns about the direction we are heading with large MNCs holding all the cards.
