Caffeinated Food and Beverages

Chocolate is always the first thing people learn not to give to their dogs. This is partly because chocolate, particularly milk chocolate, is high in fat and can cause pancreatitis. But it takes large portions of milk chocolate to lead to serious complications in dogs.

Caffeine is actually the most dangerous toxin found in chocolate. Coffee, tea, and anything else containing caffeine are just as bad as chocolate for dogs, affecting the heart and nervous system. Thus dark chocolate is more dangerous to dogs than milk chocolate because it contains more caffeine. It is rare, however, for dogs to consume enough chocolate to cause death.

Unknown Toxins (Grapes and Raisins, Macadamia Nuts)

An unknown toxin in grapes damages the kidneys of dogs. In very small quantities grapes seem to do no harm, but more than a few can cause death or irreversible damage. Please note, however, that not all fresh or dried fruits are harmful to dogs--just grapes and raisins. And grape seed oil seems to cause no harm.
