Robin Fox traces the anthropological background of ritual food in his article Food and Eating: An Anthropological Perspective – Social Issues Research Centre. Ancient taboos, which underpinned early religious practice, frequently included a ban on eating the tribe’s totem animal. This animal, Freud suggests, came to represent the father figure, hence it was only eaten in annual ceremony. More frequent consumption would have been considered equivalent to patricide.

Sharing a meal with the deity pre-dates the Christian Last Supper, which underlies Holy Communion. Fox notes that the Communion, derived from the Last Supper, encapsulates the idea of sharing a meal with God. Some scholars maintain that a shared meal symbolises eating the deity to absorb with his strength and goodness.
